How You Can Adjust the Audio Bitrate on Discord

In order to improve the call quality when using Discord for voice communication, you may need to adjust the audio bitrate on your computer. This is possible through the Discord settings menu; here's how to access it.

Change the Audio Bitrate in Discord on either Windows or Mac

In the Discord web player or desktop app on a Windows 10 PC or Mac, you can adjust the audio bitrate by hovering your cursor over the name of a voice channel in the server's channel list. This action, on the other hand, can only be carried out by server administrators.

When you hover your cursor over the name of a channel, the channel's settings icon and the option to join the channel directly appear on your screen. To make changes to the channel's settings, click on the settings icon.

Audio bitrates ranging from 8 to 96 kilobytes per second (kbps) are available to all Discord users, with 64 kbps set as the default channel bitrate. You will, however, have access to bitrate values as high as 384kbps if you are connected to a Discord server that has received sufficient Discord Nitro boosts.

Adjust the "Bitrate" slider in the "Overview" settings menu for your voice channel to a value that is within the server-specific limits.

Any changes you make to the audio bitrate settings are automatically reflected in the audio output. After you have made your selection regarding the audio bitrate, close this menu by selecting the close button in the upper-right corner or by pressing the Escape key on your keyboard.

Changing of Audio Bitrate in Discord on Mobile Devices

If you are using Discord on an Android, iPhone, or iPad device, you can also adjust the audio bitrate for voice channels on servers that you own or moderate using the Discord app.

To do so, launch the Discord app and select the menu icon in the upper-left corner of the screen.

Select the correct server, then select and hold the desired voice channel in the channel list until the server is fully operational again.

After a few seconds, the "Channel Settings" menu will appear, allowing you to change the name of the channel, the channel limit, and the bitrate settings.

The "Bitrate" slider can be moved up or down to improve or decrease the quality of the audio bitrate being used. Once you're satisfied with the settings, click the Save button in the lower-right corner of the screen.

If you haven't already done so, join the channel after you've changed the audio bitrate by selecting it from the list of available channels. When you join, the audio bitrate you have selected will be applied automatically.

It may be necessary to repeat these steps if the bitrate is excessively high (or low).
