Robinhood discloses data breach that exposed millions of customers' personal information



Robinhood said on Monday, November 9 that it had been the victim of a data breach earlier this month that had exposed the personal information of millions of customers, and that hackers had then demanded an extortion payment in exchange for the information.


According to the trading platform, the unauthorized party was able to obtain a list of approximately 5 million people's email addresses as well as the full names of another approximately 2 million people as a result of the November 3 attack.


As stated by the company, the incident resulted in the exposure of the names, dates of birth, and zip codes of a "limited number of people," approximately 310 in total, as a result of the incident. Robinhood stated that "extended account details" had been revealed for approximately ten customers, without providing any additional information.


A statement from the company stated, "We believe that no Social Security numbers, bank account numbers or debit card numbers were compromised, and that no customers have suffered financial loss as a result of the incident."


Immediately following the containment of the intrusion, "the unauthorized party demanded an extortion payment," according to the statement. However, the company did not say whether it complied with the extortion payment demand, despite the fact that it stated that it notified law enforcement "promptly."


In after-hours trading yesterday, the stock of Robinhood fell by approximately 3%.


A third party obtained access to Robinhood's customer support systems by impersonating a customer service representative over the phone, according to the company.


As of this writing, Robinhood said it is in the process of making "appropriate disclosures to affected individuals" and that it is continuing to conduct an investigation with the assistance of security firm Mandiant.


According to Robinhood's chief security officer, Caleb Sima, "as a Safety First company, we owe it to our customers to be transparent and behave with integrity."
