Apple's wearables dominance is set to continue

If only minor tweaks are made to the Apple Watch and AirPods, the company will be able to maintain its dominant position in the wearables market, according to Rupantar Guha, associate project manager for Thematic Research at GlobalData, a leading data and analytics company.

The fact that Apple only makes minor redesigns to its wearable products at the California Streaming launch event tonight will make no difference because the company's strong brand and customer loyalty will ensure that the products' popularity will remain high. In fact, the Watch Series 7 and AirPods 3 are expected to further solidify Apple's position as the undisputed leader in the smartwatch and hearables markets, which GlobalData estimates will be worth $64 billion and $146 billion, respectively, by 2030.

“GlobalData's consumer electronics thematic sector scorecard ranks Apple third out of 48 companies in terms of market capitalization. In addition, the scorecards rank companies according to how well they perform in the ten most disruptive themes that are currently affecting their industry. Apple receives a perfect score of five out of five in the wearable technology category, owing to the phenomenal success of the Apple Watch and AirPods. In order to maintain its competitive advantage, Apple will introduce more sophisticated wearable devices with new health tracking capabilities in 2022.”

The redesign of the form factor

“Apple is a master of aesthetics, which helps the company stand out in the fiercely competitive wearable technology market. Several smaller companies have copied the Apple Watch's rectangular face with curved edges, as well as the unique shape of the AirPods, which were first introduced in 2015. Although the most recent updates are likely to be incremental, the Apple Watch Series 7's new flat edges and larger screen size, as well as the shorter stem of the AirPods 3, will distinguish them from their predecessors and competitors.

“The new designs are in line with Apple's broader redesign strategy, which will be evident with the iPhone 12 in 2020,” says the company. The new design will be particularly appealing to users who consider the Apple Watch and AirPods to be fashion accessories that are also technologically advanced.”

Improved battery capabilities of the new devices

“According to reports, the AirPods 3 will have a longer battery life than previous models, possibly even exceeding the 24 hours provided by the AirPods Pro and its charging case. As a result, the AirPods 3 is expected to have one of the best battery capacities available in the hearables market, giving it a competitive advantage over competing devices.

The Apple Watch Series 7 will also have a smaller-sized chipset than the S6 chipset found in the Watch Series 6, which will allow Apple to increase the battery capacity of the device.
