What is Ozone?

Ozone Definition

Ozone is a pale blue gas which consist of three oxygen atoms bonded together. Ozone is a naturally existing substance up in the Earth's atmosphere which protects the surface from harmful ultraviolet (UV) rays unless dissipated by natural or human phenomena.

Ozone is also considered a pollutant with negative effects for humans and other creatures when present closer to the ground.

The Ozone is produced when heat and sunlight cause chemical reactions between oxides of nitrogen (NO ) and Volatile Organic Compounds (VOC), which are also known as Hydrocarbon.(HC)

Ozone is an unstable substance which can be destroyed by molecules containing Nitrogen(N), Hydrogen( H), Chlorine (Cl)or Bromine (Br).  In the 1950s, scientists began measuring ozone concentrations above Antarctica, giving them their first proof that there was a problem with the ozone layer.

In  1980s, scientific were able to map an annual hole that opened in the ozone layer over Antarctica in the spring, In 1987, aircraft observations gave a questionable proofs that the ozone  was being created by human-made pollutants called chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs), according to a history from NASA.

The chlorine and bromine element which are present in chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs) and compounds which are highly destructive to ozone.

The Earth's Atmosphere As Seen From A Very High Viewpoint.

The Earth's atmosphere is made up of layers of different densities of various gases.

The chlorofluorocarbon come from industrial processes like refrigeration and are used in fire suppression and foam insulation, among other applications. The scientist expert were able to find that ozone depletion was not  just occurring over the South Pole but also in areas over North America, Europe, Asia and much of Africa, Australia and South America.

Ozone (O3) is a gas molecule that is in the upper layers of the atmosphere, where it is present in the ozone layer which protects life on Earth from very short -wavelength ultraviolet radiation from the Sun. When Ozone is produced at ground level, it can lead to respiratory problems in humans (particularly those who are asthmatic patients) and can also prevent human not to breathe properly. The photosynthesis process in vegetation, cause decrease in agricultural yields.

A recent research showed that, between 2005 and 2016, there was a 20% drop in the amount of ozone being destroyed by chlorine.

How is Ozone Harmful?

When  inhaled, ozone can damage the lungs. The small amounts of Ozone can lead to chest pain, coughing, shortness of breath and throat irritation. Ozone increase chronic respiratory diseases such as asthma .

Uses of Ozone

1. Ozone is used to  purify water, and treat industrial wastes.

2. Ozone is a molecule with three oxygen molecules.

3. Ozone is in the upper atmosphere and it protects living organisms by keeping Ultraviolet rays from reaching the earth's surface.
