These Nano-Origami Chips Could Bring in a New Generation of Portable Devices

What is Origami

Origami is a art or technique of folding paper into decorative shapes and figures associated with Japanese culture. 

The Origami word is now generally used as term or technique for all folding practices both in science and technology.

What is Nano Structure

A Nano Structure is a structure of intermediate size between microscopic and molecular structures. 

The distortions in the graphene result in the nanomaterial adopting the properties of a transistor, scientists reveal in a paper that was published in the journal ACS Nano. Thus, a strip of graphene that is treated in this way can be fashioned into a microchip that is a hundreds of times tinier than those found in current devices.

Nanomembranes that has mechanical properties of typical sheets, can be rolled, twisted, and bent, to return to their original shape, while maintaining in their single-crystal nature. The field has really advanced from semiconductor bilayer microtubes fifteen years ago to quite complex 3D kirigami and origami shapes that demonstrate the potential of 3D devices with the unique electronic, electromagnetic function, or optoelectronic.

New material will help to create smaller and faster devices

Many of the Physicists have done some demonstration of a process to create microchips that are hundred times smaller than that of their conventional siblings, and this may be of great help eventually to create processors that are smaller and faster.

The process that the physicists create involves creating kinks in the structure of the nanomaterial graphene, which makes it have a similar behavior like a transistor. This is often referred to as the material of the future because of its myriad applications, the researchers after several research have shown that when a strip of ui is wrinkled in a particular way, it can start to have behaviours like a microchip, which is around a hundred times smaller than conventional microchips. 

Prof Alan Dalton a lecturer in the School of Mathematical and Physics Sciences at the University of Sussex  said this; “We’re mechanically creating kinks in a layer of graphene. It’s a bit like nano-origami.”

The physicists, after much findings and experiment have now published their research in the ACS Nano journal. They had an argument that creating chips using nanomaterials will make computer chips smaller and faster. 

Prof. Dalton came to a reasoning that the development comes at a critical juncture since manufacturers are now at the limit of what they can do with traditional semiconductor technology. 

“This type of technology which is called the “straintronics” that is using the nanomaterials as opposed to electronics just to allow the space for more chips to be inside any of the device. Everything and anything that we want to do with computers to speed them up can be done by just crinkling graphene like this,” the professor adds.

Furthermore, it is said that the new nano-origami chips will help reign in the energy costs of running data centers and also the carbon footprint of web hosting companies. 

Dr Manoj Tripathi, one of the Research Fellow in Nano-structured Materials researches at the University of Sussex and the lead author on the paper “The development is a greener, more sustainable technology. Because there are no additional materials that needs to be added, and because this process works majorly at room temperature rather than the high temperature, it uses less energy to create".
