How to Activate LED Camera Cutout Notifications on Samsung Devices

Android smartphone makers have excluded some very neat features in their attempt to create devices with minimal frames, such as notification lights. Once available on many smartphones, this tiny LED could let you know about messages, calls, and more. Most smartphones lack this inside the notch cutout for cameras, speakers, and other sensors these days.

However, some modern Samsung smartphones possess a cutout for the front camera. It can be used as a LED notification light using third-party applications.

Which Samsung Phones Permit LED Notifications?

The perforated cutout for the front camera allows a greater screen-to-body ratio because it does not need a notch. The camera is situated inside the cutout, with the respective hole cut on the display by a laser.

Usually, there is a ring around this cutout used as a notification light with the applications we will analyze below. The following Samsung devices support LED camera notifications:

  • Samsung Galaxy S10e, S10, and S10+
  • Samsung Galaxy S20 series
  • Samsung Galaxy S21 series
  • Samsung Galaxy Note 10 and Note 10+
  • Samsung Galaxy A20, A30, A50/A51, and A70/A71
  • Samsung Galaxy M10, M20, M30, M40, M51

The newer versions of the aforementioned devices may also get the cut-out notification function of the LED camera. For example, the Galaxy S21 series, launched in early 2021, also supports these applications. If you are not sure, try the apps on your new model to see if they work.

Applications Used to Activate Samsung LED Notifications (Cutout)

For those who own the Galaxy S10/S10+ or Note 10/10+, you should use the Good Lock app for this purpose. If you have one of these series, you will have to use aodNotify, as Good Lock doesn't do the job well on those devices.

Owners of Galaxy S10/S10 + or Note 10/10+ can use the Good Lock app for this purpose. If you possess one of these Galaxy A or M series, you will need to use the aodNotify app, as Good Lock does not do well on these devices.

Activating LED Notifications on Galaxy S and Note Series

Good Lock works on both the old Samsung Experience UI and the modern One UI. It offers many customization features, but to turn on the LED notification light around the camera cutout, you'll need to use the EdgeLighting + plugin.

First, install the Good Lock app from the Samsung Galaxy Store if you haven't already. Open and download all available plugins, including EdgeLighting+. Then launch the plugin from the app drawer.

Here’s how to set up EdgeLighting + to display LED notifications:

  1. Select the option that says Effects.
  2. Scroll down to the Eclipse feature and select.
  3. Activate the effect.
  4. You can change the color of the LED light and adjust the duration if you want.
  5. You will always need to activate it on the display and in the settings on your phone.
  6. The app will prompt you automatically to do this, then direct you to the required settings. Once you are on the page, activate Always on Display.

Activating LED Notifications on Galaxy A and M Series

The Galaxy A and M devices with model numbers A20/A30/A50 and M10/ M20/M30/M40 all have a notch of waterdrop instead of the camera cutout. Hence, you will not be able to use the Good Lock application with them.

Nonetheless, you can use another application, aodNotify, to activate LED notifications around the notch or cutout of the camera. This app also works with newer A-Series and M-Series that have a camera cutout instead of a notch. It can be used even with the flagship Galaxy S series, such as the S10, S20, and Note 10 series.

How to Install and Tweak aodNotify:

  1. Install aodNotify if you don’t have it, then launch and approve the necessary permissions.
  2. After standard permissions, you'll be required to provide access to app notifications.
  3. Then it would help if you allowed the app to use Edge Lighting and Always on Display. Open the options, then scroll down to find aodNotify and choose it.
  4. Next, you will be required to install the AOD Manager. Follow the instructions and install.
  5. Once you have approved all the necessary app permissions, activate the light toggle for Notifications. This is the same as the Edge Lighting feature option on the Good Lock app.

Hit the notification light input to change behavior. There you can select the type of color and effect and even tweak the edge lighting’s dimensions.

Once you are satisfied with the appearance, you are good to go.

The notch in the camera or the ring around the cutout should light up whenever you get a notification. This will only work when the phone is locked.

Restoring LED Notifications on Galaxy Devices

If you want back the old LED Android notification light, these apps allow you to render it on the modern Galaxy series. It's a great way to receive notifications about essential alerts without even turning on the screen. A few other apps are available for Galaxy phones that can activate LED notifications through the camera cutout. However,  AodNotify and Good Lock remain the best.

In the meantime, ensure you know how to turn off annoying notifications, so your phone doesn't light up all the time.
