Accidents happen — and to some people, they happen again and again.

French Olympian Samir Ait Said broke his leg on Saturday while trying to vault during preliminaries. Cameras and spectators watched in horror as Said writhed in pain on the stadium floor. After several excruciating minutes, an ambulance crew finally came to pick Said up — and then immediately dropped him on the floor.

The drop happened as Said was being escorted from the stadium. The Olympian lifted his arm to acknowledge the standing ovation he had just received from the crowd. Just minutes later, spectators dropped their mouths in astonishment as the medical crew dropped the lower end of the stretcher while trying to move Said into the ambulance — dropping the athlete in the process.

The 26-year-old is currently recovering in a nearby hospital. He will be forced to withdraw from the Rio Olympics and will have to undergo many months of rehabilitation. In 2013, Said won gold in his sport at the European Championships
