The full meaning of the acronym “DHCP” is Dynamic Host Control Protocol. DHCP is a client/server protocol that automatically provides an Internet Protocol (IP) host with its IP address and other related configuration information such as the subnet mask and default gateway.

With DHCP, computers request IP addresses and networking parameters automatically from a DHCP server, reducing the need for a network administrator or a user to configure these settings manually.

Computers use the Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol to request Internet Protocol parameters from a network server, such as an IP address. The protocol operates based on the client–server model.
