Oyetoke Tobi - Tuesday, March 07, 2017

Want to scan a QR code? Do you know that with the latest version of Chrome on your iPhone device, you can easily scan any QR codes?

The latest version of Google Chrome came with an interesting feature that lets you scan QR codes with your iPhone device camera.

What are QR Codes?

QR (Quick Response) codes are square barcodes developed in Japan. QR codes can be captured more quickly and can contain more information unlike traditional UPC barcodes, which are made up of a number of horizontal lines.

QR codes are basically machine-readable labels. Computers can understand them much more straightforwardly than they can understand normal text. QR (Quick Response) codes are used in many places, such as advertisements, billboards, business windows, and on products.

QR codes were first developed in Japan 1994 to help track parts in the manufacturing of vehicles. Currently, the uses of QR codes have extended to include bookmarking webpages, initiating phone calls, getting coupons, watching videos, opening website URLs, sending short messages and emails, connecting to Wi-Fi networks and so on.

However, you’ll need a QR code scanner in order to understand what information a particular QR code contains. You’ll either need a device for scanning QR codes or simply use an app on a smartphone to scan it. However, if you are using Google Chrome on your iPhone you don’t necessarily need a separate app to scan QR codes, since it has a built-in QR code scanner.

Of course, there are many free and paid apps out there, available on most smartphones like Android, iOS and Windows phone for scanning QR codes. But if you are a Chrome user, you don’t need to download any another app. You can just use the Chrome’s built-in QR scanner.

You must be running on the latest version of Chrome which is version 56.0.2924.79 on your iPhone device in order to do this. So ensure to update your Chrome, if you haven’t already.

Here’s how to scan QR codes on your iPhone with Google Chrome.

To scan QR code on iPhone with Google Chrome is very easy. Since the option to scan a QR code has been added to Chrome as a 3D shortcut. So, in case you have an iPhone with a 3D touch (iPhone 6S and newer), all you need to do is to hard press on the Chrome icon on your Home screen until a menu appears. Then tap “Scan QR Code” on that menu.

And in case you have an older iPhone (iPhone 6 and earlier) without the 3D Touch feature, you can just use Chrome’s Spotlight action as alternative to scan a QR code.

To scan QR codes with the Chrome’s spotlight action, simply swipe right on the main Home screen of your iPhone device to access the Spotlight search screen. Then tap on the search box at the top of the screen and type in “QR Code” in the search box. Then scroll down to find the “Scan QR Code” option under Chrome and tap on it.

Now, in case you are using the Chrome’s QR code scanner for the first time, Chrome will ask for permission to access your iPhone camera. So tap on “OK” to allow Chrome use your camera.

Then after that, a frame with white corners will appear. Now aim your phone’s camera at the QR code to make sure the entire QR code is within the frame.

Once it is placed accurately, the QR code will be automatically read. If in your case, the QR code you want to scan is a URL of website, the website will open automatically in the default browser which is usually safari. In case you would like to open QR codes for website URL in Chrome, you can just add a bookmarklet to Safari that will open the current webpage in Chrome.

That’s all. From now on you don’t need to use any app to scan QR codes since you can easily use your iPhone to scan it. Sadly, scanning QR codes with Chrome on iOS is only available on iPhone devices, not iPads
