How to Set Up “Single Sign-On” on the Apple TV

Oyetoke Tobi - Monday, January 23, 2017

Apple TV being one of the most popular smart TV now has a new feature that helps to solve the inconvenience/difficulty we usually face with streaming boxes. Most streaming boxes have a big common inconvenience which is, you have to sign in to each and every app individually using your cable subscription credentials. This will be inconvenience and tiresome if you have large number of apps you want to sign into.

However, with the new feature known as Single Sign-On in tvOS 10, you can easily sign in once and be done with it. So here’s how to set it up on the Apple TV.

Single Sign-On as it names implies, sounds really convenient isn’t it? Of course, there are a few things to be aware of and take into consideration.

Firstly, your Apple TV must be running on the latest tvOS which is tvOS 10 and your Apple TV is likely to be updated automatically as long as you didn’t change the auto-update feature at some point.
Secondly, it’s only available in the US which is annoying. Furthermore, it only works with a limited number of cable providers, as well as a limited number of apps. You can visit Apple’s support page to see a complete list and hopefully more will be added in the future.

So if your cable or satellite provider appeared on the list, then you’re good to go.

Launch the Settings apps from the Apple TV home main screen.

Then select “Accounts”.

Now scroll down and click on “TV Provider”.

Then select “Sign In”.

Then select your cable or satellite provider from the list of supported cable or satellite provider available. Like I said earlier if yours isn’t listed, then you won’t be able to use the Single Sign-On feature on your Apple TV.

Now, you can either choose your email address that’s already connected with your Apple ID or in case you use a separate email address for your cable subscription account, just click on “Add New”.

Then enter in your username/email address connected with your cable subscription account and then click on “Continue” at the bottom side of the screen.

Then enter in your password and click on “Sign In” at the bottom.

Once you’ve signed in successfully, click on “Find More Apps”.
Then it will take you to a page in the App Store where you’ll be able to see all of the streaming apps that has support for Single Sign-On and your cable or satellite provider. Naturally, there may be more apps available that has support for your cable provider but don’t have support Single Sign-On yet.

If you open a supported app and choose a movie or TV show to watch, you’ll receive a pop-up dialog asking you if the app can use your cable subscription account. So click on “Allow”.
Well, that’s all. Hopefully, there will be more cable and satellite providers added to the Single Sign-On feature support list in the future. Many of the popular streaming apps developers are already in, so you shouldn’t have much problem finding an app that has supports for Single Sign-On feature.
