How to Use Optimized Storage in macOS Sierra

Is your Mac filled and messy with useless and unnecessary files? Don't want your Mac to be entirely disorderly for space? You can manage files properly on your Mac running macOS Sierra by Optimizing your Mac Storage. So you’ll have to use the Optimized Storage feature in Mac.

Managing your sensitive files properly is very vital whether you are using iPhone or Mac. And there are always two major advantages of perfect file management you’ll get using Apple Devices - It won’t let your device space be messy. It will prevent the iCloud storage from going overboard.

Luckily, macOS Sierra had the file management issue fixed with the introduction of “Optimized Storage” feature. Optimized Storage automatically removes old, useless and unused files from your Mac and stores them to iCloud once you have it enabled. You can always download those removed items from the cloud whenever you want.

So here’s how to free up storage as well as manage files properly on your Mac powered by macOS Sierra? 

The first to do is to click on the Apple icon at the top-left corner of the screen.

Then select About this Mac in the drop-down menu shown.
Then navigate to Storage tab → Click on Manage in the System Storage window.

So from there you should be able to see the four Optimized Storage options at the right side of the window.

So we’ll take a look at each options.

Store in iCloud

Using this option will affect your iCloud Storage limit. But, it won’t affect your iCloud storage limit in case you have Desktop and Documents Syncing as well as iCloud Photo Library enabled already.

So click on “Store in iCloud” tab.

Then, check the box for “Store files from Desktop and Documents in iCloud Drive.” It will save the files on your desktop and in the Documents folder.

Also check the box for Store photos and videos in iCloud Photo Library. It will store your entire original photos and videos in iCloud.

Then click on Store in iCloud again to let the iCloud syncing.

Optimize Storage

The Optimize Storage option lets you save media files like movies and TV shows you’ve watched on iTunes which are not saved in the cloud. You’ll always have the option to re-download the media if you would like to watch it later. Moreover it lets you to store your email attachments also.

So click on Optimize if you want to use this option.

You need to click Optimize again to allow it to remove the iTunes movies and TV shows you have already watched.

Empty Trash Automatically

This will automatically erase the files left in the trash for over 30 days. Now click on Empty Trash Automatically to continue. You’ll need to turn it on at the Empty Trash Automatically section.

Click on Turn On twice at the section to turn it on and confirm it.

Reduce Clutter

The “Reduce Clutter” feature lets you clean up files manually on your Mac. It makes it easier to identify old or large items which are no more useful to you. So click on Reduce Cutter option to continue.

Then click on the Review Files button in the Reduce Clutter section.

Select the file categories in the sidebar. For example, you can choose Documents, GarageBand, Applications, iOS Files, iTunes, or Trash. You can check the storage occupied by any file in the list. You can also remove any file you don’t want.
