How to Connect to Instant Hotspot using your Mac

Oyetoke Tobi - Tuesday, November 15, 2016

Do you know that you can share your iPhone or iPad data connection with your Mac? Yes, you can and all you have to do is to use and enable the Instant Hotspot feature on iPhone. You'll need to configure some setting on your iPhone!

What is Instant Hotspot?

Firstly, what is Instant Hotspot is part of Continuity that lets you share the data connection from your iPhone or cellular iPad with your Mac or other Apple devices. Unlike a Personal Hotspot that requires a password and connects like a normal standard Wi-Fi router, it uses your Apple ID for authentication, Bluetooth Low Energy (BT LE) for fast connection, and Wi-Fi for data transfer. All this makes it much faster and more convenient, but it's only work for your Apple devices.

Requirements

Instant Hotspot transmits internet availability using Bluetooth Low Energy, authenticates by Apple ID, and transfers data using Wi-Fi. Below are the requirements your iPhone(s), iPad(s), and Macs need to meet in order to make it work.

Your device must sign up for a data plan that has tethering (for cellular device only).

Your iPhone or iPad must be running on atleast iOS 8 or upward, Mac must be running on atleast OS X Yosemite or later.

Your devices must be equipped with Bluetooth LE (devices like 2012 Mac or later, iPhone 5 or later, iPad 4 or later, any iPad mini, iPod touch 5

You must log in the same Apple ID on all your devices.

How to Enable Instant Hotspot on iPhone

Open the Settings app through the iPhone/iPad Home screen.

Then tap on Personal Hotspot.

Then tap on the Personal Hotspot On/Off toggle button, it turns green if it is ON and grey if it is OFF.

And in case the Personal Hotspot setting is not in the Settings main menu you can follow the below process:

Open the Settings app on your iPhone.

Then tap on Cellular.

From there, tap on Personal Hotspot.

Then tap on the Personal Hotspot On/Off toggle button, it turns green if it is ON and grey if it is OFF.

And in case you still can’t find Personal Hotspot settings, ensure your data plan supports tethering or your device supports it.

How to Tether your Mac to your iPhone using Instant Hotspot

How do I tether my Mac with my iPhone? Very simple, just follow the following steps to do so

So click on the Wi-Fi icon in your Mac's menu bar.

Then select the iPhone Device you want to use as the hotspot.

So that’s it, your Mac will start using your iPhone data connection. You can go ahead and test it by just browsing through your internet browser. This is a nice feature because it saves you the time of entering password and of course you can some time forget your password which is very annoying.

Nevertheless, you can always still use the normal personal hotspot feature by providing the password in case your device doesn't meet the stated requirements, or you want to connect to or with someone else's device.
