How to Set Up the Philips Hue Motion Sensor

Oyetoke Tobi - Thursday, October 20, 2016

One of the latest accessories to join the Philips Hue line is a motion sensor that can sense and turn on your lights when you walk into a room. It can also start certain scenes depending on the time of day. So we’ll show you how to set it up and have motion-activated lights in your home.

You can always use third-party motion sensors with your Philips Hue lights using different services, but the Hue Motion Sensor ($40) makes it easier to transform your Hue bulbs into motion lights in your house. The Hue Motion Sensor offers more services and has a lot of features way more than any other third-party motion sensor. For instance, the Hue Motion can sense whether it’s night out, and turn your lights on more dimly. Or sense if there’s a lot of sunlight in the room and automatically disable the motion-sensing lights.

Additionally, you can create different scenes inside the Philips Hue app and assign them to some certain time frames all through the day. The motion sensor can also turn off lights after a certain amount of time has passed when no motion has been detected, from one minute all the way to one hour.

So here’s how to set it up

Open the Philips Hue app on your phone and then tap on the Settings icon (gear icon) at the top-left corner of the screen.

Then tap on “Accessory setup” on the next screen.

Then tap on the round plus button at the bottom-right corner.

Tap on “Hue motion sensor”.

So remove the plastic strip from the Hue Motion Sensor unit. It requires a little bit of a pull, so you can pull it hard a bit. Then wait for a few seconds and verify that you see an orange LED flashing after that. If so, just tap on the “LED blinking” button at the bottom side.

Then select which room you want to connect the motion sensor in. You can also select more than one room, however, there’s a maximum of three rooms in order to maintain the connection issues.

Now place the sensor wherever you want in the room, if possible you can place it at the entrance so that the motion sensor portion has a wide view of the room. The motion sensor is self-supporting and also comes with a wall mount if you don’t want to keep it on the floor or table. After placing it in appropriate place, tap on “Got it” in the app.

So it will show the default settings that the motion sensor will use on the next screen. You can always come back and change these settings easily once you have the motion sensor set up. So tap on “Done” at the bottom side.

Then your Hue Motion Sensor will show up in the list of Hue accessories that you have connected on the Philip Hue app. So you can quickly and easily enable or disable the motion sensor at any time by just tapping on the toggle switch to the right on this menu.

So if you tap on the motion sensor in the list, it will bring up the motion sensor settings you can customize. You can select the rooms you want the motion sensor to work in, as well as how the lights are turned ON based on the time of the day. For instance if it’s nighttime, the motion sensor will turn your lights in to a dim setting.

The Hue Motion Sensor also has ambient light sensor, which makes it know if the light is already bright enough in the room so it doesn’t unnecessarily turn lights on. You can also set how long the lights remain ON after it begins detecting no more motion in a room.

You can’t simply set the motion sensor to turn on lights. Instead, you’ll have to assign it to a scene.

The Hue Motion Sensor is certainly one of the best motion sensors you could possibly use with your Hue lights and it is best motion sensor that is compatible with Hue lights.
