How to Control your Apple TV Volume with the Siri Remote

Oyetoke Tobi - Friday, September 30, 2016

The newly designed Siri Remote which of course comes with the Apple TV 4 is absolutely an improvement from the previous generation, which comes completely with a trackpad and motion tracking. It also comes with devoted volume buttons that allow you to control your TV soundbar, or audio receiver’s volume i.e no need for a second remote anymore for your TV sound.

Though, these volume buttons don’t just work automatically. You still have to manually go into the settings and make the remote learn the volume commands of your TV, soundbar, or audio receiver. Fortunately, the process to do this is a very straightforward process provided that you know what you’re doing

So to start, navigate to the Settings app from your Apple TV’s home screen.

Then select “Remotes and Devices” from the settings options.

Then scroll down and select “Volume Control”.

So now in case there is a setting called “TV via IR” in that menu, then your television supports HDMI-CEC, and all you have to do is to select the option. Then your Apple TV remote will be able to control your television’s volume easily.

Now in case you don’t have this option there, then you’ll need to do more setup. So just click on “Learn New Device”.

Then pick up the remote for your television, soundbar, or audio receiver and then point it at the Apple TV.

Now press and hold down the Volume Up button until the progress bar fills up on the screen.

Then press and hold down the Volume Down button until the progress fills up on the screen also.

Then give the custom volume control a name. You can just give it any name you feel like. Well I named it “Soundbar” since I will be using the remote to control the volume on my TV’s soundbar. Then select “Done” when you’re done.

So press “OK”.

Then the new setting will show up in the list as “(Your custom name) via IR”. So just select it.

That’s all. Then from then you can easily control your TV, soundbar and audio receivers with the Apple TV remote. So when you click the volume buttons on your Apple TV remote, it’ll change the volume on your TV so that you don’t have to switch back and forth between remotes.
