What is Service Mobility in SIP?

SIP Services can be provided in both proxies or in UAs. Provision of service mobility along with personal mobility can be challenging or difficult unless the user’s devices are identically configured with the same services.

SIP can support service mobility without trouble over the Internet. While connected to Internet, a UA configured to use a set of proxies in India can still make use of those proxies when roaming in Europe. It doesn’t have any effect on the quality of the media session as the media always flows directly connecting the two UAs and does not pass through the SIP proxy servers.

Endpoint resident services are available and accessible only when the endpoint is connected to the Internet. An ending service such as a call forwarding service integrated in an endpoint will fail if the endpoint has lost its Internet connection for the time being. Therefore some services are integrated in the network using SIP proxy servers.
