What is Max – Forwards Header Field in SIP?

The Max-Forwards header field is used to point out the maximum number of hops that a SIP request may take.

1. The value of the header field is reduced by each proxy that sends the request.

2. A proxy receiving the header field with a value of zero puts away the message and sends a 483 Too Many Hops response back to the originator.

3. Max-Forwards is a compulsory header field in requests as per RFC 3261.

4. The suggested value is 70 hops.
