What is Expires Header Field in SIP?

The Expires header field is used to point out the time interval in which the request or message contents are valid.

1. When present in an INVITE request, the header field sets a time limit on the finishing point of the INVITE request.

2. Specifically, the UAC must receive a final response (non-1xx) within the time period or the INVITE request is automatically cancelled with a 408 Request Timeout response.

3. Once the session is established, the value from the Expires header field in the unique INVITE has no effect—the Session-Expires header field must be used for this purpose.

4. If available in a REGISTER request, the header field sets the time limit on the URIs in Contact header fields that do not have an expires parameter.

5. Expires is also used in SUBSCRIBE requests to specify the subscription duration.
